Operant conditioning

Also known as: instrumental conditioning, instrumental learning

Operant conditioning is a form of learning in which behavior is shaped by its consequences. Behaviors followed by reinforcement become more frequent, while behaviors followed by punishment become less frequent.

Operant conditioning is learning through consequences: an organism's voluntary behavior becomes more or less likely depending on what follows it. The concept was developed by B.F. Skinner, building on Edward Thorndike's law of effect, and it differs from classical conditioning, in which an involuntary response becomes associated with a new stimulus. In operant conditioning, the organism operates on its environment and learns from the results.

The four core consequences are defined by two distinctions: whether something is added or removed, and whether behavior increases or decreases. Positive reinforcement adds something desirable (a treat for sitting); negative reinforcement removes something unpleasant (taking aspirin ends a headache) — both increase behavior. Positive punishment adds something aversive (a speeding ticket); negative punishment removes something desirable (losing screen time) — both decrease behavior. A key exam trap: negative reinforcement is not punishment; "negative" refers only to removal.

Reinforcement schedules determine how durable learning is. Continuous reinforcement builds behavior fastest, but intermittent schedules — fixed-ratio, variable-ratio, fixed-interval, variable-interval — resist extinction better, with variable-ratio schedules (like slot machines) producing the highest, steadiest response rates.
