Periodization is the planned variation of training volume, intensity, and exercise selection over time so that an athlete peaks for competition while avoiding overtraining. It divides a training year into macrocycles, mesocycles, and microcycles with distinct goals.
Periodization organizes training into structured blocks instead of repeating the same workout indefinitely. The rationale comes from the general adaptation syndrome: the body adapts to a training stress, then stops adapting once that stress becomes routine. Systematically changing the stimulus keeps adaptation going and gives the athlete planned recovery before fatigue accumulates into overtraining.
The structure is hierarchical. A macrocycle covers the full training plan, typically a year or a competitive season. It contains several mesocycles of a few weeks to a few months, each targeting a specific quality. Mesocycles are built from microcycles, usually a week long, that lay out individual training sessions. Across these blocks, training volume generally decreases while intensity increases as competition approaches.
A traditional model moves through hypertrophy and muscular endurance work (high volume, low intensity), then basic strength, then strength and power, then a peaking or competition phase (low volume, very high intensity), followed by active rest. Sport seasons map onto this as the preparatory period, first transition, competition period, and second transition. Undulating or nonlinear models achieve the same goal differently by varying volume and intensity within each week rather than across months.
Periodization is a core content area on the CSCS exam from the NSCA. Expect questions that ask you to identify the correct cycle terminology, match a training phase to its appropriate volume-and-intensity profile, or select the phase that fits a given point in an athlete's competitive season.
