The vestibular sense is the sensory system that monitors balance, head position, and movement through space. Its receptors sit in the semicircular canals and vestibular sacs of the inner ear.
The vestibular sense is your sense of balance and spatial orientation — the system that tells you whether you are upright, tilting, spinning, or accelerating, even with your eyes closed. Unlike vision or hearing, it monitors the position and motion of your own head rather than the outside world.
Its receptors are located in the inner ear, next to the cochlea. The three semicircular canals, oriented in roughly perpendicular planes, detect rotational movement: as the head turns, fluid (endolymph) inside the canals lags behind, bending hair cells that signal the direction and speed of rotation. The vestibular sacs (the utricle and saccule, together called the otolith organs) detect linear acceleration and the pull of gravity, signaling head tilt and straight-line movement, such as a car speeding up or an elevator rising.
Vestibular information integrates continuously with vision and with kinesthesis — the sense of body-part position from receptors in muscles and joints — to keep you upright and your gaze stable while you move. When vestibular signals conflict with visual input, as on a rocking boat or in a moving car while reading, the mismatch can produce dizziness and motion sickness. Spinning rapidly and then stopping leaves the endolymph still swirling, which is why the world seems to keep rotating.
