Static stretching

Static stretching is holding a muscle in a lengthened position for a sustained period, typically 15 to 30 seconds, without movement. It improves range of motion and is best used after training or in a dedicated flexibility session.

Static stretching means moving a joint to the end of its range of motion and holding that position while the muscle is relaxed. The athlete stays still rather than bouncing or moving through the range. A stretch is held to the point of mild discomfort — never pain — for roughly 15 to 30 seconds, and repeated for two to four sets.

The lengthening effect comes from two mechanisms. Mechanically, sustained tension allows the muscle-tendon unit to deform slowly, a viscoelastic property called stress relaxation. Neurologically, the sustained stretch stimulates the Golgi tendon organ, which inhibits the stretched muscle and allows it to relax further. This is also why a bouncing, or ballistic, stretch works against the goal: rapid lengthening triggers the muscle spindle's stretch reflex, causing the muscle to contract rather than release. Static stretching may be active, where the athlete holds the position with their own muscular effort, or passive, where a partner, a strap, or gravity supplies the force.

Timing matters more than most people expect. Prolonged static stretching immediately before explosive activity can temporarily reduce force output, power, and sprint speed, so a pre-training warm-up is better built around a general aerobic warm-up followed by dynamic stretching. Static stretching earns its place after training or in a separate session, where it is a safe and effective way to build long-term flexibility.

The CSCS exam tests static stretching within the warm-up and flexibility domain. Be ready to compare static, dynamic, ballistic, and PNF stretching, to name the recommended hold duration and set count, to explain the roles of the Golgi tendon organ and muscle spindle, and to know why static stretching is not recommended immediately before power-based performance.
